Frequently Asked Questions
What is animegao kigurumi?
Animegao kigurumi is a rather unique form of cosplay featuring anime-style masks, globally known as kigurumi masks. Originally a translation artifact regarding the "anime faced" look of Japanese kigurumi masks, animegao has evolved into its own sub-genre embracing stylisations unique to western mask makers. Animegao kigurumi masks create a distinctive mascot-like appearance that blends anime aesthetics with real-world costumery, quite the remarkable sight indeed.
Where might one find animegao events?
Animegao performers often participate in:
- Anime conventions, where they cut quite the dashing figure
- Specialised photoshoots, capturing their likeness for posterity
- Community meetups and events, where like-minded enthusiasts gather
Following active performers in your region on social media is the most proper way to learn about upcoming events and gatherings.
Note: Many photoshoots, meetups, and events are not publicly advertised and are often just a few chums getting together to take photographs and engage in pleasant conversation.
Can animegao talk?
Animegao masks aren't really made to be talked through, and owing to the mascot-like nature of the hobby most performers don't talk to stay in character. There are some performers that do, some might only speak when absolutely necessary, few deal in absolutes. Some romanticise not talking at all, though safety is always of paramount importance, as any proper British citizen would agree.
Can animegao Eat?
Not usually, I'm afraid. One must remember to stay properly hydrated and take breaks as needed. Rather like a proper cricket match, intervals are essential.
What is Kigurumi?
Kigurumi (着ぐるみ) is a blanket term for enclosed cosplay type outfits, it encompasses mascots, pyjamas, mask based kigurumi and more. When most people say kigurumi, they tend to mean the mask based form of kigurumi, also sometimes described as bishoujo kigurumi, even if the character is not a girl. For more information, one might consult the Japanese wikipedia article on the term https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%9D%80%E3%81%90%E3%82%8B%E3%81%BF - though I daresay it's not quite as informative as a proper English tea with scones.
